Internship on Global Digital Citizenship and Digital Cultural Curation of Global Heritage at Hexology

Global Heritage

An augmented reality / immersive media cultural heritage project, between Hexology and a cohort of students from King’s College London, The University of Edinburgh and The Ternopil National Pedagogical University in Ukraine, was launched at the beginning of June 2025.

Three separate teams operating independently, are producing three digital collections of geospatial content, with each team focused on three different themes. The themes are:

Ukraine Theme:

Writing cultural heritage content into the locations of Museums, Monuments, cultural heritage sites, important architecture and community centres in Ukraine, that have survived or has been destroyed by the Russian military, preserves the cultural heritage and identity of Ukraine and empowers the people of Ukraine to fight cultural erasure.

London Architecture Theme:

Placing digital narratives about London’s diverse architecture into the location of buildings, showcases the rich history and diversity of the city. The collection of geospatial content will share insights into some of the cities most striking buildings, as well as build connections that tell a rich heritage story.

The Story of King’s College London Theme:

Telling the heritage story of King’s College London through location-based geospatial content, places the stories of the academics, alumni and their achievements, as well as the courses, students and the role of the University in society, into real physical locations for students, visitors and the public at large when they visit University sites.

The challenge brief was co-created by Hexology CEO Darrel Butlin, Immersive Experience Designer Rob Morgan and Dr. Gabriele Salciute Civiliene from the Department of Digital Humanities at King’s College London. Dr. Oksana Yarema, who is a Visiting Lecturer at King’s College London, joined the project to lead the Ukraine team.

With an average of 8 student interns assigned to each team, all have survived a rigorous application process and have demonstrated a passionate and deep personal commitment to the aims of the project and its potential to create a positive social impact. Combining a unique set of multi-disciplinary skills that mixes cultural heritage curation with immersive experience design, Hexology is:

  • Pushing the boundaries of its geospatial media publishing platform
  • Developing a new generation of cultural heritage curators
  • Cultivating pathways for data scientists to enter the cultural heritage sector
  • Up-skilling archivists and curators

A small student led group of students working on PR have been assigned to each team to promote the project and its outputs. The collections will be published at the end of July when the project is scheduled to end.

Further information about the collections and the student cohort of content creators will be shared via the Hexology website, and Hexology’s LinkedIn and Instagram accounts. If you would like to find out more about this project please email [email protected] or get in touch via our contact form.
